“A Diplomatic Solution”

1700 1700 Daniel Stuelpnagel

This painting I created from many layers with the top layer being a spontaneous link to Tanya’s work by replicating from memory a mix in Cerulean Blue and Primary Blue with Titanium White that would link this small piece with her larger pieces installed in the main room.

Around this time I also began varnishing the finished pieces with matte medium to dim the gloss of the top layer which seemed overly contrasted with the usually flat appearance of other layers that I had sanded down, thus pushing back the top layer to function as background field and enabling the central vector spaces of the composition to reach forward to the viewer.

This makes the entire painting unified in a satin finish and lets the figure / ground relationships be determined to the eye by composition, contrast and color.
